Safety

Safety when shooting is paramount. This seems such an obvious statement you wonder why it must be made but all too often familiarity breeds contempt.

Fortunately we are creatures of habit and it is the Club's policy to ensure all new members develop the habits that ensure safe enjoyable shooting. To that end new members are given extensive briefings on the safe handling of the weapons we use as well as safe use of the range facilities.

As people progress they will almost certainly visit other locations and enter county and national competitions. It is imperative that good habits go with the shooter as a dim view is taken of bad habits at competition level and it is not unknown for shooters to be asked to leave the range and even the competition.

Definitions:

  1. Club The room where club members and visitors book in, prepare their equipment and socialise.
  2. Range The area over which weapons are discharged including the firing point and targets.
  3. Firing point The location that people discharge weapons from. This may be on the 25 - 50 yard range downstairs, the 100 yard range or the air weapons range.
  4. RCO The Range Conducting Officer who is responsible for ensuring the safe use of the range.

Below are listed the top safety considerations when visiting or shooting at the club. Please ensure you are familiar with them.

  1. Never point a weapon at anyone else!
  2. Only those shooting or instructors are allowed on the firing point during a detail.
  3. Do not load or start firing until told to do so by the RCO.
  4. If you have any problems while shooting place the weapon down and speak to the RCO who will assist you.
  5. To indicate a rifle is made safe a breech flag is inserted or the bolt is removed.
  6. When moving to and from, or on the range ensure that the weapon is made safe.
  7. On completion of your shoot make the weapon safe and await the RCO's instructions.
  8. Never go forward of the firing point without the RCO's permission.
  9. The RCO's decision is final! Any further conversation on any matter is to be conducted off the range.

Ammunition MUST NOT be removed from the club house unless it is entered onto your FAC. If you do not have an FAC you must hand ammunition into the Duty Officer with your name on the box for storage.
